Gardening Project

The gardening project is a service aimed at adults with mental health problems, learning difficulties and those experiencing social exclusion.

Our aim, through various horticultural activities, is to support service users to learn new skills, develop new interests and improve their quality of life, in our large peaceful garden.

Kingston Primary Care Trust is helping to fund this initiative for the first 5 years. After that the funding must be provided through the projects' own enterprise.

Opportunities range from garden maintenance, which provides more formal work experience, to propagating and caring for plants in our greenhouses, polytunnel and garden.

Short Term Aims (1 year):

  • Gardening activities at Fircroft Centre
  • Take on contract gardening
  • Planting and selling plants on the premises

Medium Term Aims:

  • Develop educational activities to provide certificated training in gardening to Level 1 and later Level 2
  • Training in customer services Level 1
  • Developing links with Colleges and other organisations
  • Seeking opportunities to sell plants
  • Develop further gardening contracts

Long Term Aims:

  • To provide development opportunities for service users in team leadership
  • To work closely with Work Start, and other agencies, to support service users, where applicable, to integrate into mainstream employment
  • To become a self-funding sustainable project (after 5 years)
